Tooth Extractions in Orange, CA

Your teeth serve a vital purpose. Meant for biting, chewing, and supporting the structure of your mouth and jawbone, natural teeth perform their tasks well. That’s why dentists go above and beyond to restore, preserve, and repair the natural teeth of their patients. Sometimes, though, tooth extractions are unavoidable.

Here at Orange Premier Dental, we provide tooth extractions and tooth removal services for patients in and around the Orange, CA, area. Throughout the procedure, we make sure you’re comfortable, informed, and relaxed. We'll also help you with post-procedure care so you can get back to living your daily life as quickly and easily as possible.

Preparing for Your
Tooth Extraction

Before your dentist removes your tooth, they'll conduct a thorough review of your medical and dental history. They’ll also order a comprehensive dental exam, complete with X-rays. This step is critical since X-rays reveal the shape, length, and position of the tooth in the surrounding bone. The X-rays will guide the dentist to performing the extraction in the least invasive and most efficient way possible.

Before the extraction takes place in the office, your dentist will numb the area surrounding the tooth with a local anesthetic. If the removal is more complex (a procedure known as a “surgical extraction”), IV anesthesia may be necessary.

When are Tooth
Extractions Necessary?

Often, dentists can use a filling, crown, or other treatment to repair teeth that are broken or damaged. Sometimes, though, the damage is too extensive, and extraction is the only choice.

Here are a few of the primary reasons it may be necessary to have a tooth pulled:

  • Decay or infection has reached deep into the tooth, and it’s too much for a root canal or similar procedure to repair.
  • There has been a significant trauma or injury.
  • There is not enough room for all of the teeth in the mouth.
  • Baby teeth do not fall out in time for permanent teeth to come in.
  • Orthodontic treatment requires tooth extraction to make room for teeth as they move into place.
  • Wisdom teeth are impacted or must be extracted before or after they come in.

If your dentist believes you need a tooth extraction, the team will walk you through the reasons for the procedure, as well as what you can likely expect during the process.

The Two Types of Tooth Extraction

There are two general types of tooth extraction: simple extractions and surgical extractions. Simple extractions remove a tooth that is visible in the mouth. During these extractions, the dentist will numb your gum tissue and affected tooth and then remove the tooth gradually and carefully.

Surgical extractions, on the other hand, are used for teeth that have broken at the gum line or which have not erupted into the mouth yet. Oral surgeons typically perform surgical extractions, and they are typically performed under IV anesthesia.
